Osborne Hog Feeders

The industry leader in hog feeders also makes a pig feeder selection that includes the smaller capacities for farrowing, nursery, and finishing, used from weaning through fully grown adults. The hog feeders below are made with a long-lasting poly trough to eliminate the dangers of rusting and decay from pen acids. They all have adjustable-rate feed control as well. These durable outdoor hog feeders are top-of-the-line.

Below is a fantastic firsthand account of the assembly of the 45-bushel feeder from Watts Way Farm. A big thanks to Scott for sharing his experience along with his tips, tricks, and things to watch for when putting a feeder together.
Outdoor Hog Feeder Operation
The Osborne Feeders are designed to be used outdoors, in the field, year-round. Most of the feeder is made with a polyethylene material that prevents rusting and increases durability over metal hog feeders. The feeders are available in four large capacities of 45, 65, 85, and 105-bushel sizes.
Feeder Construction and Design
The poly feed trough design prevents degradation from standing water, and the paddle sweep design cleans the trough as it moves. Most importantly, the on-demand design only releases the feed when called for to eliminate waste and increase profits. There won't be any standing food in the trough to get moldy or become play waste. It's only there when a hog is hungry!
All of the feeders are available with optional galvanized steel skids, so you can drag them around to different feeding areas without worrying about damaging the bottom of the feeder itself.

Osborne Pig Feeders, Hog Feeders, and More!
Osborne Industries has been a leading supplier of Pig Farm and Hog Equipment for decades. They manufacture high-quality feeders and production equipment to help small and large-scale operators from nursery-sized pigs, all the way up to market-ready hogs.
Their feeding products focus on maximizing profits by minimizing waste, feeding labor, and creating long-lasting, durable feeders for everyday, year-after-year use. Their innovative designs continue to evolve, as demonstrated by the newest addition to the family, the Fast-Start Feeder. This feeder automatically converts from a gravity feed, where food stays in the trough at all times, to an on-demand feeder when pigs are large enough to ask for feed, automatically!
Osborne also manufactures heating pads and even portable scales. Everything an operator would need to get from piglet to market!
Frequently Asked Questions
What does mechanical feed flow mean, and how does it reduce waste?
The standout feature of Osborne’s Big Wheel Feeder design is its mechanical-flow feed delivery system. In this innovative approach, animals, not gravity, dispense the feed they need, minimizing waste significantly. Unlike traditional feeders relying on gravity, which often leads to manual adjustments and overfilled troughs, Big Wheel Feeders eliminate gravity flow. A unique system of internal parts in the feed hopper prevents gravity flow, ensuring animals dispense feed ad libitum and eliminating waste by stopping dispensing when the trough is full.
How do I teach pigs to use the “Big Wheel”?
Animals quickly learn through play that the feed wheel in the trough area must be rotated or moved for feed to dispense from the hopper. During the introduction phase, Big Wheel Feeder users typically manually fill the trough. As the initial trough is consumed, pigs naturally engage with the wheel, realizing its role in directing feed to the outer trough area for easier consumption.
Why are trough lids or covers not used?
Big Wheel Bulk Finish Feeder models excel in outdoor settings, even when exposed to the elements, with plugging being a rare occurrence. Adequate stocking of animals prevents water from rain or snow from overcoming the self-cleaning action of the feed wheel. Additionally, the feed hopper's position relative to the trough, combined with the mechanical-flow design, prevents moisture from causing plugging issues. For feeders with a limited number of animals, drilling weeping holes in the trough aids in moisture reduction before potential plugging problems arise.
Can I feed sows with a Big Wheel Bulk Finish Feeder?
Unlike finishing hogs, sows are not typically fed ad libitum at all times. Big Wheel Feeders are designed for ad libitum feeding, allowing animals to eat as much as they want continuously. Feeding sows in this manner for extended periods may lead to overweight animals, affecting breeding performance. While the large trough openings accommodate most sows, using an ad-lib feeder for sows, except during lactation, is not recommended.
Can I stock a Big Wheel Bulk Feeder with fewer than 90 head?
All Big Wheel Bulk Finish Feeders accept up to 90 head without feed restriction. While a reduced number of animals can be stocked on the feeder, the potential issue of under-stocking may arise during extreme weather conditions. Refer to "Why are trough lids or covers not used?" for additional information.

Open Feeding Trough - no slamming doors!
While rain may enter the trough, pigs naturally drink the rainwater and consume any feed that may have gotten wet, keeping the trough clean. The feeder's unique design features a feed hopper positioned above the trough and a specialized feed delivery system, including a sweeping feed wheel and a feed sweep in the hopper bottom. This system effectively prevents rainwater from wicking into the hopper, ensuring that the feed remains uncontaminated and fresh, even in wet conditions.
The feed wheel has paddles on it that scrape the bottom of the trough as it's turned to help prevent any buildup of excess wet feed.
