Tombstone Bull Hay Feeder Description and Design

Heavy-Duty Round Bale Feeder for Bulls, Draft Horses, and Large Livestock

The Tombstone Bull Feeder — a rugged, high-capacity hay feeder specifically engineered for bulls, draft horses, and other large livestock. Built on the proven foundation of our Tombstone Hay Saver, this upgraded feeder incorporates key design enhancements to meet the unique feeding needs of larger, more powerful animals.

Engineered for Strength and Durability

This feeder features a reinforced steel hoop and upgraded heavy-duty rings to withstand the force of aggressive feeders like mature bulls and bison. The interior sheeting placement adds extra structural integrity, ensuring long-lasting performance in even the harshest conditions. Whether you're feeding in open pastures or confined pens, this feeder is built to endure daily use by the largest livestock on your ranch.

Optimized Design for Large Animals

Unlike traditional hay feeders, the Tombstone Bull Feeder includes wider spacing between the tombstone-style feed stations, allowing ample room for bulls' and draft horses' larger necks. This thoughtful spacing reduces the number of feed stations from 15 to 12 but significantly improves comfort and accessibility for large animals.

Video Overview: Features of the Round Bale Feeder

Heavy-duty Bale Feeder

This very large and durable bale feeder is meant for your largest and roughest bulls, cattle, and horses. Its extra-strong construction provides a nearly indestructible hay bale feeder that will last for years under the heaviest amount of abuse. It has a large and sturdy footprint, and the bottom diameter measures 9' 8", tapering to 8' 6" at the top of the stanchions so your large bales will remain upright longer. The sloped and secure hooped uprights are built to withstand the shoulder pressures of your largest livestock. The livestock feeder has no sharp edges so necks are protected from cuts and scrapes that cattle or livestock can get when feeding. The base uses 1.5" square tubing while the hoops are built with incredibly strong 2.5" hoops. The skirt measures 27" tall to save fallen hay for consumption and minimize waste from blowing or getting trampled on. It keeps your feed fresh and available and prevents it from being trampled.

Video Recap:

Efficient Feeding with the Open-Top Tombstone Saver Hay Feeder

One of the most effective features of the Tombstone Saver hay feeder is its open-top design. Unlike traditional round bale feeders that include a top ring, this feeder allows cattle to keep their heads down while feeding. This reduces the amount of hay that is pulled out and trampled, leading to significant cost savings and less waste on the ground.

Research conducted at the University of Manitoba shows that the Tombstone Saver helps save an average of 60 pounds of hay for every 1,000 pounds fed when compared to traditional slant-bar style feeders. This efficient hay usage translates into long-term savings and more effective feeding management for livestock operations.

Reduces Movement and Structural Damage

Another major benefit of the Tombstone Saver cattle feeder is how it handles pressure from animals during feeding. When cattle lean in, their legs remain behind their shoulders, which are stopped by the vertical uprights. This eliminates the leverage they would otherwise use to push or move the feeder, helping protect the structure and minimizing the risk of damage.

Built with Heavy-Duty Construction

Not all round bale feeders are built the same. While some competitors use lighter 16-gauge steel, the Tombstone Saver round bale feeder is constructed with a top ring made from heavy-duty 11-gauge steel. This added strength is especially important where the hoops are welded to the top ring, as these points endure the most stress during use.

The exterior sheeting is another critical feature. Not only does it help contain hay and reduce waste, but it also prevents cattle from climbing into the feeder. This feature improves safety for both the animals and the equipment while extending the life of the feeder.

High Capacity and Easy to Use

The Tombstone Saver offers 15 feeding stations, making it a high-capacity solution for feeding multiple animals at once. It easily accommodates up to a 6-foot round bale. For added convenience, it can be disassembled and opened using a hinge kit. Simply remove the bolts at the joint, install the hinge, and pull the pin to open the feeder. This design allows it to be used with a three-point hitch, offering flexibility for various feeding setups and transport needs.

Stays Clear of Mud and Freezing Ground

The bottom of the feeder includes three mud legs on each panel to lift the entire unit off the ground. This keeps the feeder out of the mud during wet conditions and prevents it from freezing to the ground in winter. When a feeder freezes to the ground, trying to lift it with a loader can place extreme stress on the frame. These legs are a small but vital detail that helps extend the feeder’s life and maintain ease of use throughout the seasons.

Added Durability Through Smart Design

A critical design improvement in this feeder is the addition of a vertical support post under each tombstone arch. Welded between the top and bottom rings, this support works in coordination with the sheet metal and circular rings to evenly distribute pressure. This significantly reduces the chance of uprights bending and helps the feeder maintain its shape and strength for many years.

With these reinforcements, the Tombstone Saver hay feeder offers the durability needed for long-term use on the farm. It’s not uncommon for this feeder to last 10, 15, or even 20 years—far beyond the lifespan of cheaper models that end up abandoned in the pasture.

Farmer Review

"I’ve been raising cattle for years, and I really appreciate how simple and strong this feeder is. It just makes life easier. The open top helps keep the hay in place, and my animals waste a lot less. The feeder doesn’t move around when they’re eating, and I haven’t had to fix or replace anything since I bought it. It’s easy to use, saves hay, and stands up to rough use out in the field. It's simple, strong, and saves money!" – George G. - Rancher
