This video review by the folks at Tarter describes the three different styles and finishes available for this traditional and versatile design.
Our product specialists are here to talk to you about the versatile three-piece horse hay feeders that are designed for large, round bales if hay.
This feeder is offered in three different versions of the same feeder: The Hay Saver finished with a powder-coating of paint, with and without the hay saver panel as well as the galvanized feeder with a skirt.
They are exclusively designed for horses and have an open top. Obviously, we don't want to mix up the cattle and horse feeder because this feeder is open on the top. We call this a Tombstone style frame and anytime you see this type of open framing, it means it's been designed for a horse. It would be hard for a cow to get its short little through these openings. The horse has a much longer neck so it can easily reach over and feed.
Let's talk about what size animals we have. If it's a standard horse, it's not a problem at all to go with this feeder, their long necks allow them to easily reach the hay. But let's say you have miniatures at home, like a miniature donkey or a miniature pony. You would definitely want to look at the feeder that doesn't have the hay saver panel on the bottom. The miniature animals are not going to be tall enough to be able to reach over the Tombstone to consume hay. They're going to have to do a little cheating to come from below to access the hay.
You can see there are legs on each section so three legs total to help hold the feeder up out of the dirt and mud. The sections are bolted together and it takes a 9/16 inch wrench to get them secure. We recommend that when you assemble the feeder, you turn the feeder upside down, match the holes up, and then tighten the bolts. You can then flip this feeder right side up and it's ready for hay! The bolts are included on the feeder so you don't have to buy additional bolts or hardware to assemble the feeder. Everything is included.
The Tarter horse hay feeder has a hay-saving skirt to keep it in the feeder and not blow around the pasture!
