Cattle Guard Options

barn world logo

Barn World has a large selection of cattle guards to choose from. Once installed, you’ll no longer have to deal with the inconvenience of opening and closing gates again!  Pass through your fence-lines with ease while your cattle remain securely contain with these livestock barriers!

There are many different types, styles and options available when selecting a cattle crossing for your property. Load ratings, boxes, wings and foundations are all available options.

Take a look at some of the general styles and features available below and if you’d like a quote with shipping or have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Sales@BarnWorld.com or call anytime 720-238-2190.

Rated Cattle Guards

The H-rated cattle guards are designed for highway use and certified to meet DOT requirements for public road projects. There are also designs with higher, heavy-duty load ratings for off-road use for BLM, USFS, NP, and US Military installations.

The off-highway rating requirements are much higher than the H-ratings. They’re used for rugged service in commercial applications such as mining, forestry, agriculture, and petroleum production.

Standard Cattle Guards

Barn World also carries a less expensive option for private property. They’re built for everyday use on private driveways and farms. They carry fully-loaded semis, farm equipment and everyday traffic on private land. These are much more economical and very popular for driveway use.

The standard cattle guards are made of NEW, 3″ outside diameter, schedule 40 steel. All round top rail cattle guards may be ordered with optional wings, integral box, or the removable box.

Cattle Guard Options

There are a lot of available options to fit individual site requirements. An effective livestock barrier requires load carrying considerations as well as some optional features to be effective. Take a look at some of the more common illustrated below.

Cattle Guard Wings

The wings prevent your cattle from walking around the connection between the fence and the cattle guard itself. They physically transfer the vertical barrier that your fence line creates into the horizontal livestock barrier the crossing creates in the road.

Without this physical transition, cows could simply step around the end post that terminates at the cattle crossing and easily escape to greener pastures.

wings installed on a cattle guard

Box Options

There are two different box types available: integral and welded.

The integral box is a steel skirt welded to the perimeter of the cattle grid. It does not add any structural integrity but is simply there to keep dirt from sliding in underneath the grid when lay directly on the ground.

boxed cattle guard

Installation is as simple as laying directly on the ground and creating a dirt ramp on either end so vehicles may cross.

These are typically used when an excavated vaulted area is not necessary. This type of installation is common in low traffic areas such as driveways, remote cell phone towers and oil operations. Temporary installation is also benefit from the ability to pick the guard up and move to another location. This makes it popular at construction sites.

With the removable box, you may lift the grid from the installation without disturbing the surrounding area. Lift the grid to clean underneath. It’s a handy and time-saving feature if you expect a lot of debris to accumulate in the area.

Cattle Guard Foundations and Footings

one of the most time-consuming portions of installing a cattle guard is the necessity of creating a solid foundation to transfer weight to the ground. We are now able to ship precast concrete footings with cattle guards directly to the job site.

cattle guard footings

Installation is easy. Lower the concrete directly into the ground to provide structural support. They are large and heavy items that require a mechanical means of unloading upon arrival. They are quite a bit heavier than the cattle guards themselves.

The foundations have precast anchor bolts included to match the flat top rail cattle guards that they ship with. This allows you to bolt them down directly in the field without any drilling at all.

Snow Plow Strips

Snow plows can be damaging to a steel crossing. Install plow strips in heavy snow areas so they may cross over the guard with minimal interference and wear.

ATV cattle guards

The off-road cattle crossings are very unique. You to simply set them in the middle of your fence line and tie your fencing to the vertical posts. It sets directly on the ground and the raised rails create a formidable livestock barrier.atv on a cattle guard crossing

Pipe Fence Video Review

Below is a great video overview that illustrates the features and construction of the pipe fence. These high-quality panels are easy to install and over-built to last for years in your most active pastures.

The product we want to discuss today is Hi-Qual continuous fence.

This is an example of the two inch, five rail configuration. It’s available also in two inch, six rail as well as in the five rail, 1-1/2″. All three configurations are constructed out of 16 gauge, 1017 high-tensile, high-carbon steel.

You’ll notice that in the continuous fencing, we’ve incorporated the same notched vertical supports that you saw the livestock gate and panel line. The panels come in 10 foot and 20 foot lengths and one end is “swedged” or male. This is built so it slides into the next piece and as you install it on wood or metal post, gives the appearance of being one continuous panel.

Some of the accessories that you would incorporate into your design: clips, elbows and posts.

Obviously, we need the clips to hold the panels to the posts. The 45° and 90° elbows create the continuous finished look.

You can see there are many applications for Hi-Qual continuous fence. They’re commonly used a perimeter fence, a pasture fence, corrals and even non-agricultural uses such as in oilfields.

With these continuous fence panels, you can achieve the longevity of a heavy-duty metal panel. They last longer and are more durable than any wooden or vinyl fence that you would put up.

Floor Insulation Panels for Radiant Heat

Radiant heat is one of the most economical means of heating a home or workplace. Floor Insulation is critical for keeping heat from being absorbed into the ground. These radiant floor insulation panels direct it into the slab where it’s needed and prevent heat loss to the ground below.

The floor panels have knobs molded into them designed to hold various sizes of Pex Tubing at a uniform-designed distance. This allows even heat distribution and holds the tubing in place during installation and while covering with cement. The raised knobs protect the tube during installation and make planning and layout easy.

Installing the panels is easy and we’ve included an overview and some guidelines below.

Insulating Floor Panels

radiant floor insulation panel with pex tubing installed

Floor Insulation Installation

The first step during installation is planning the layout of the panels. They’re rectangular and measure 23″ x 49″ with an effective insulation area of 23″ x 48″. The edges overlap to lock together and keep the forms from moving when walking on or pouring cement.

Floor Panel Layout

The panels are easily cut for rectangular or square rooms and even in irregular rooms, they’re easy to fit. The boards are mostly Styrofoam with a vapor barrier on the bottom that’s easy to work with. Below is a picture of a room with the floor insulation laid out and the PEX Tubing run where the heat is to be radiated.

floor insulation panels in a large room

Installing the Pex Tubing

Create a floor plan of where the radiant heat should be introduced to the slab and place the PEX. Most installations call for an even distribution of the heat, but a contractor should be consulted if more is desired in a certain area over another. The tubing can easily be set closer together in that area to provide more heat if needed.

Each panel has knobs that hold the tubing securely in place during construction. It will protect it from wheelbarrows and work boots and provide a uniform distance between runs. The knobs are designed to accommodate most tubing sizes from diameters of 3/8″ up to 3/4″. Consult your heating boiler for the best match of tube size.

Installing the Pex Tubing

worker installing pex tubing into a floor insulation panel

Cement INSTALLATION

Once the floor insulation panels are in place and the PEX is installed, you’re ready to plan for covering it with cement. This process should be done by a qualified contractor familiar with this type of installation. A recommended minimum of 1.5″ of coverage is required through the floor. It can go pretty quickly and once you start, you’ll need to finish!

Below are pictures of the cement being floated on top of the panels. It can be a labor-intensive process and require immediate and constant attention.

concrete covering radiant floor insulation panels  installing cement on top of floor insulation panels  workers covering floor insulation with cement

Once the floor has cured, the majority of the work is done. You’ll be able to test your radiant heat boiler and make any flow adjustments deemed necessary.

Benefits of Radiant Heat Floor Insulation Panels

The quietness and efficiency of radiant heat are undisputed. The uniform heat throughout the floor will provide comfort and utility savings for years to come. The panels themselves have a 10-mil vapor barrier polystyrene film to prevent moisture transfer and their real value is their insulating properties. See the chart below for details

Floor Insulation Ratings

The panels are available in three different R-values. Not all installations require very thick, 3″ panel insulating properties so other alternatives are offered.

Floor Panel R-Ratings

  • R-6     – 1″ floor panel – overall 1 – 7/16″
  • R-10   – 2″ floor panel – overall 2 –   7/8″
  • R-15   – 3″ floor panel – overall 3 –   7/8″

Choose the panel that’s right for your climate and heating needs.

Shipping

The insulation is very lightweight and can be shipped all over the United States. They’re packaged on pallets, in UV protective bags as shown below. Each bag is fairly light (30 pounds or so) and a lift-gate service is available to lower an entire pallet full (8 bags) to the ground upon arrival if necessary.floor insulation in shipping bagsIf you’d like a quote with shipping right to your door, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help. Creep Feeder

A quality Creep feeder is essential for making sure your younger animals get the nutrients they need. The best feeding environment for calves is one away from the adults and these feeders are designed to provide just that. The proper creep feeder will have your calves ready for market sooner and in high quality condition.

The design uses a outer ‘cage’ to keep adults from being able to access the feed trough area. The cage has outer bars that are spaced so calves and smaller animals can enter but larger animals cannot. They also use an adjustable horizontal entry bar that can be moved up as the animal grows. The cows and larger animals aren’t able to fit underneath so only the young ones can enter.

Once through the entry area, the calves are free to eat the provided minerals in the trough free from the larger animals. The ability to eat in a stress-free area allows them to consume minerals and supplements for maximum healthy weight gains.

These feeders are built to have your calves ready for market sooner and in higher quality condition. They also are used to provide health supplements to smaller animals in need of specific feed or supplements.

Below are a few examples of the feeders that can be shipped throughout the US. If you’d like a quote with shipping to your front door, let us know and we’ll be happy to provide one for your review.

Single Sided Creep Feeders

The most common design has a single side for feeding. It allows the feeder to be filled from outside the guarded feeding area. That may not seem like a big deal but when you’re trying to fill it or any feeder, your rambunctious eaters can get carried away and step all over you. It’s far better to fill from outside the trough area to prevent any accidental injuries to you or your calves.

This style has holding capacities of 500 all the way up to 1,500 pounds.

single sided creep feeder for calves calf creep feeder creep feeder with yellow cage

Double-side Creep Feeders

These are designed to feed large groups of animals and have much larger capacities than the single-sided design. These larger capacities range from 1,200 to 3,000 pounds!

The extra size and capacity means you don’t have to fill the feeder as often if used for smaller groups. It also means you can easily feeder those large herds without repeated fillings.

The double-side build means there’s twice the feeding space available as animals can use both sides. The two individual troughs are both fed by the center storage area. This is great for not only large groups but can also be used in a fence-line to feed two separate pastures or pens at once.

creep feeder with two sides   calf creep feeder with two troughs  double sided creep feeder

Deer Feeders

Nutrition is very important for calves, sheep, goats as well as deer. This unique feeder is designed without the surrounding pen to make sure they have free access to supplements.  It’s used for wildlife and game management or for raising in captivity. Use this feeder to ensure your entire herd gets the necessary protein they need.

Large bucks and whitetail deer need protein all year round and especially when recovering from the rut. It also helps with antler growth during the 200-day growing period.

creep feeders  gray creep feeder

Creep Feeders

Small animals need proper nutrition for a health start to life and can require access to mineral and supplements without competition from larger adults. This separate feeding area also keeps your larger animals from downing all the expensive feed before the young ones who need it can get to it.

Please let us know if you’d like a quote with shipping right to your farm or ranch and we’ll be happy to forward one for your review.

A Pig Scale for weighing small animals

The Osborne Pig Scale is used for weighing all types of small animals. It has side rails and doors on each end for a safe and orderly weighing process. This creates a secure and controlled environment for capturing accurate weights.

A hog enjoying his weigh-in!

A pig being weighed in a small animal scale

Features of the Scale

Every try and weigh an animal as it dances around frantically on the scale?  The weight jumps around and the animals is so anxious, an accurate weight is illusive.

Containment and gates

A stress-free animal is calmer and easier to weigh than one that’s unsettled. Ever notice how a calf calms down once secure in the chute? It’s the same for smaller animals who are in the ‘comfort’ of confinement too. The interior of the scale has a solid floor for footing confidence and the large doors allow easy access and entry.

Once inside, they’re able to relax more in the defined space. Calm and relaxed is easier on the animal and provides better opportunities to get an accurate weight.

Once done with weighing, the scale has a rear door for the animal to exit. They don’t need to turnaround and leave through the front door. This one-way design is more natural and safer for the animal and operator

sheep being weighed in the pig scale

Accuracy

The pig scale uses cable-free weigh arms to help remove any swaying or movement cause by an excited animal. The anti-sway bars coordinate the movement of the basket with the scale. The entire mechanical portion is cable free! This allows the two to be in-sync for fast and accurate weights. A mechanical dial is available for quick reading as is a digital meter for increase accuracy.

Pig Scale Options

The scale is customizable and has many available features to make weighing your animals a breeze. Below are a few of the favorite additional features:

Indicator

The are two available indicators for the pig scale. The large mechanical dial allows for a quick glance to note the weight and is the most economical option. There’s also a digital indicator that’s accurate to 1/10th of a pound for more precise measurements.

pig scale mechanical dial  digital pig scale indicator

Wheel Kit

To make the 5′ long scale portable, an optional wheel kit may be added. It mounts to one end of the scale and with the pull of the handle, you can roll it around. Roll it to the area where you’ll be weighing instead of herding your animals to it. It also makes it easy to put out-of-the way for storage.

pig scale wheel kit

Gate Options

There are two gate options for the scale. One is the side opening style that opens like a traditional door. This simple side hinge design is economical and easy to operate.

The center opening gates open from the center with two side doors. The center-opening is more natural for animals to use. Instead of going around the end to enter or exit, they walk right through the center.

pig scale with side opening doors  pig scale with center opening doors

Size

The scale is available in an 18″ and 24″ inch width. Both sizes have a 500 pound capacity and the only difference between the two is the width itself.

Summary

Keeping your animals calm while going through the weighing process is the key to a stress-free and safe weigh-in for your and your animals. The secure side-rails and doors create a trouble-free scale and weighing system.

The door options grant easy access and exit from the scale while the wheel kit will make it portable. Take the scale to where it’s needed instead of bringing the animals to the scale. The feature also makes it easy to move out of the way when not in use.

The Osborne Pig Scale has been popular for decades with back-yard farmers and producers alike. They’re quality and experience in the industry make it a top-notch choice for any operation.
