Suspended Hay Feeder

The hopper horse hay feeder is designed to keep your hay off the ground and is available for your horses to eat at all times. Suspending the hay prevents ground moisture from molding and rotting the bale, while the tall hay skirt keeps the loose, fallen hay available to be eaten and not wasted! This tough, durable bale feeder is made from 14-gauge, 1-1/4" tubing and weighs 457 lbs. The 3/16" coil chain is rated at 800 pounds with a 3-time safety factor for a total static load capacity of 2,400 pounds.

To keep shipping costs low, it ships in two pieces as shown in the pictures below. Use this popular, heavy-duty outdoor hay feeder to keep your waste to a minimum.

Horse Hay Feeder Details and Review

The horse hay hopper round bale feeder saves feed and thus money by eliminating waste from fallen hay that's pulled from a bale and by preserving the bale from ground moisture and rot with its suspended design. Maximize your hay savings by using a hay hopper feeder instead of a traditional round feeder! You could be losing 10% of your hay. See all of our hay feeders here!

Pictures of Hay Hopper Horse Hay Feeder

This picture shows the fully assembled hay feeder that is ready to have a large round bale dropped directly into the top to start feeding your equine friends. The chains hold the hay off the ground and keep it from coming in contact with ground moisture that can cause rot, while the tall skirt below keeps any fallen hay from blowing around away from where it can be eaten. This saves money!

Michigan State University Study regarding storing and feeding hay as round bales

Storing and feeding hay as round bales is a popular management practice because of the low labor requirements compared to other hay feeder systems. The objective of this study was to determine the potential feeding loss associated with different designs of bale feeders. One hundred and sixty cows were used to evaluate four feeder designs. The designs included cone, ring, cradle, and trailer types. The waste from round-bale hay fed in these feeder types ranged from 3.5 to 14.6%. The type of feeder can affect the amount of hay wasted and the ranking results, from most hay loss to least was: cradle > trailer > ring > cone (suspension). The suspended hay feeder was the most efficient of those in the study.

Feeder Specifications:

  • Inside diameter - 7 ft 6 inches
  • Horizontal rings and vertical tubes are 14 Ga. 1.25 square tube
  • Steel Sheets - 16 gauge
  • Number of openings - 16
  • The cone is made with 16 chains that are 3/16 proof coil chains rated at 800 lbs. with a safety factor of 2 (Calculation: 2,000 lb. bale being held up by 16 chains = 2,000/16 = 125 lbs. per chain), well within the 800-lb. rating of the chain.
  • Finished in Industrial powder coating
  • Color: John Deere green (other colors available upon request)
  • Total weight - 474 lbs.

Suspended Hay Feeder Advantages:

  • Our unique proof coil chain insert allows us to simply disconnect the chain from one half of the feeder. Then nest the two halves of the feeder together for shipping. Most cone feeders have a round feeder on the bottom and a cone insert on the top. This is just more parts to ship and more parts to assemble.
  • Our customers tell us that with some fixed cone inserts the cattle cannot reach the center of the bale. If it is a tough bale the middle portion of the bale will stay sitting in the cone. With our proof coil chain insert cattle can move the chain around so that the bale moves and they can then eat the entire bale.
  • Each vertical tube that has a chain attached to it runs all the way to the ground. This means the load of the hay bale goes through the chain, through the tube, and then directly to the ground. Even though we give you the option of having steel sheets along the bottom or having 2 extra rings at the bottom the load of the bale does not go through these.
  • Our feeder is powder coated and then all tubes are either capped or sealed to keep water out.
